An outline windfarm feasibility study by the company Wind Energy Direct (WED) concluded that there is a potential for wind energy development in Ballynagran.
The report states that ‘the wind regime at Ballynagran is potentially viable for wind energy development’ and that ‘the proposed application complies with current national and local planning policies and offers good prospects for success in the planning process.’
For this year, subject to funding, the preparation of a feasibility study including business plan is proposed. These activities will go hand in hand with extensive communication consultations.
As part of a long-term vision for the community the Ballynagran Energy Plus Community Project, using funding from a number of sources, proposes to develop a coordinated system that organises the local resources of wood and similar biofuels in the Ballynagran area into a sustainable supply which meets the needs of households and businesses in the area.
Ultimately the project seeks to coordinate the landownership, growing, harvesting, processing, transport and use of these biomass fuels into an integrated system for the ongoing commercial and social betterment of the community.
For this reason the establishment of community woodlands a proposed for Ballynagran. These community woodlands could be developed and managed to provide both the timber resource and an amenity use for the Ballynagran community.
